Traditional Asian Music: China

This video doesn't have any lyrics, but I challenge you to close your eyes as you listen and try to imagine what this song could be about.  This instrument is called a "guzheng", and may remind you of a guitar or a stringed instrument.  It is thousands of years old!

Song of the Week #7, May 4th

Musical Theatre/Broadway

Let's take a look at a different style of music this week : musical theatre! A musical is a play performed on a stage that involves singing and dancing.  Have you ever gone to one?  The musical "Into the Woods" has many fairytale characters mixed into one story.  This was made into a movie in 2014 with Anna Kendrick from Trolls!

Song of the Week #4, April 13th

Don't Give Up on Me

"Don't Give Up on Me" is a popular song by singer Andy Grammar.  He joined choir students from a New York City elementary school to sing it together.  The words and performance are emotional for me right now.  I miss you all dearly and wish we could finish the year together - but I don't want you to give up!   Keep working hard in school.  Think about the amazing memories you had in your elementary years. I'm sure your families, teachers, siblings, and more feel this way too.  Listen closely to the lyrics.  I love you all and hope yo ulike it!

Who says you have to have a complete set of boomwhackers to play along? Make your own! They may not sound like the notes but they sure are fun to play, and it helps you to practice your steady beat and reading notes as they pop up! Use empty toilet paper/paper towel rolls, or whatever you can find, and label them A - B - C - D - E - F - and G! Check out this YouTube channel "musication".  There are a TON of awesome boomwhacker songs.

Song of the Week #2, March 30th

We have been working SO hard on our recorders this year.  If you think some of our music is challenging, check out this video! :)  This is a musician who plays SIX (yes, six!) different recorders and then pieces them together.  This kind of group is called a "sextet", kind of like how a "quartet" is four and a "trio" is three.  I hope you like the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN music! :)

Song of the Week, March 23rd
Humble and Kind - PS22 Chorus

You should recognize this song.  It is the very same one we have been learning how to sing for your awards ceremony! Sing along if you remember the words. The lyrics to this song are even more important today, as we are home with our families staying as safe as we can.  Your families (and teachers!) all love you and want you to be healthy!  Remember kindness, especially when you feel cooped up inside.  We are all in it together!

Upcoming performance:

November 11th , 9:00 a.m. - Veteran's Day Assembly

In class we have been working on learning verses 1 and 4 of the Star Spangled Banner.
Below, you will find the lyrics.  Happy practicing!

O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars
through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bomb bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave?
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - "In God is our trust,"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
