Distance Learning Schedule & Activities

Dear Families,
We are going through some unimaginable times right now.  I don't have all of the answers, but I will try to help you with any questions you may have.  You can always reach me through email (anuss@wellsborosd.org) Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 3:30pm (and beyond) and at the home phone number I provided.  I don't mind phone calls, even if it is just to say "Hi!"  We'll get through this, together.

Below I am posting the weekly schedule for the learning packets that were sent home.  If you are looking for more things to do, click on the links below for more activities.

This week in your math packets you get to use rulers and measure in inches and centimeters.  These videos may help!

Are you missing our STEM sessions?  I know I am!  Jump on the STEMXpress and learn how to create, tinker, and problem-solve! Teacher leaders, from districts in the BLaST Intermediate Unit 17 region, have come together to provide you with fun and engaging challenges to expand your thinking. Each challenge has content extensions and grade-band suggestions. The best part of it all, everything you need is at home! Visit this website every Monday in May as they release a new challenge in our STEMXpress library.

Social Studies

  • Memorial Day is coming up.  Remember when we learned that Veteran’s Day celebrates men and women who served in the armed forces?  Well, Memorial Day honors those who died while serving our country. This short video clip explains:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWn2RPr-GhE
  • Goodies For Our Troops is up and running again. “Gramma” Dawn is asking for students to make cards to put in care packages  .Make a picture and drop it off at Goodies on Main Street.
  • You will see many United States flags flying during Memorial Day celebrations and parades. “The Stars and Stripes” is a nickname for our flag is a symbol of our country.  Watch this video book to tell you how our flag has changed since 1776. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5Uk089Radg

  • Summer means buzzing bees!!  It’s a good idea to avoid wasps and hornets, but honey bees are very important insects.  Check out this Mystery Doug to find out how bees make honey.https://mysterydoug.com/mysteries/honey-bees#slide-id-6490
  • Want to see some great close-ups of bees and other pollinators?  Watch this beautiful Disney clip.https://video.disney.com/watch/the-beauty-of-pollination-wings-of-life-4da84833e06fd54fff590f49 .  Did you see the saguaro cactus and the flowers that bloom at night like we read about all the way back in September (A Walk in the Desert)?  Make a list of all the pollinators you saw.
  • Did you know that bees communicate to each other through dance AND know math?  Here’s a short clip that shows what a bee’s “waggle dance” means.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LA1OTMCJrT8   Can you imitate the waggle dance by moving in a figure 8 pattern?  Draw one outside in chalk and follow your line while waggling!

    Field Day!

  • Friday would have been our Field Day.  Here are some ways you can re-create Field Day at home. https://www.weareteachers.com/field-day-at-home/
  • Create your own obstacle course in your backyard or on the sidewalk.  This page will give you many ideas!https://playtivities.com/obstacle-courses-for-kids/  I’d love to see a picture of what you create!

    Weekly Scavenger Hunt

  • A-B-C Scavenger Hunt.Print up the colorful ABC page or just write down the alphabet and see if you can find something that starts with each letter.  There are many different ways to play: outside in your yard, a walk through town (look at the store signs…can you find each letter?) or inside on a rainy day when TV isn’t cutting it.  This site suggests using it at a museum, but since that’s not possible right now, make it your own!  Here’s the link if you would like their colorful board to use.https://www.themanylittlejoys.com/museum-alphabet-scavenger-hunt/
