AUGUST – SEPTEMBER 2019

English Language Arts (ELA):
We will read the following stories, with accompanying skills and reading groups:
     * Iris and Walter (Week of 8/26)
     * Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night (Week of 9/2)
     * A Walk in the Desert (Week of 9/9)
     * Turtle's Race With Beaver (Week of 9/16)
     * Frogs (Week of 9/23)
     * The Strongest One (Week of 9/30)
     * Anansi Goes Fishing (Week of 10/7)
     * Firefighter (Week of 10/14)
     * The Life Cycle of a Pumpkin (Week of 10/21)

Spelling: 
We will complete Units 1-8 using the Sitton Spelling program, with a primary focus on:

  • vowel sounds
  • homophones
  • priority words

Grammar:  
We will be practicing sentence-structure and nouns using the Reading Street Series.

Writing:  
At this point in the year, we will review how to write one paragraph successfully by incorporating a Title, byline, topic sentence, 3 detail sentences and conclusion; and then branch out into writing multiple paragraphs.

Math:  
The following topics will be covered over the course of 6 weeks:

  • A review of basic addition and subtraction
  • fact families
  • how to make a ten
  • mental math strategies
  • using arrays
  • even and odd numbers
  • counting patterns

Social Studies:
We will be learning about communities, groups and rules.

Science: 
We will be learning about the following topics:

  • vertebrate animal groups
  • insects
  • arachnids
  • animal habitats
  • life-cycles of plants and animals
  • adaptations of plants and animals
  • properties of water

Study Island: 
Study Island is a web-based program that offers lessons, flash cards, practice and quizzes for our 2nd grade students that are aligned with our PA Standards for Math and ELA selected topics. Students will be working on this program weekly in school; however they can also access this program at home using their school-issued username/password here: https://www.studyisland.com/login

i-Ready: 
i-Ready is a web-based Math program that meets your child exactly where they are and provides data to increase your child's learning gains. i-Ready consists of two parts: Diagnostic and Instruction. The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child's needs. Students will be working on the program weekly in school to help support the Ready Math instruction that they receive from me using o
ur workbooks, daily.
